What are e-Books?
e-Books
are electronic versions of conventional printed
books, and are typically viewed on a computer screen. Hence,
the letter "e" is added to the word
"Book" to signify that the book is in electronic
form. Like printed books, the text found in e-Books is often
enriched with photos, illustrations, graphs and tables.
However, e-Books can also include narration, music,
animations and even video. Plus, users can interact,
navigate and search through the text and pages in ways not
possible in print.
It is not always necessary to be connected to the Internet
to read an e-Book, although some titles do include links to
additional information.
Because e-Books are basically computer files, they can be
stored on disk and be viewed on any computer. This makes it
possible to build a vast library of e-Books on a single CD
that you can take with you on your travels.
Do I need any special software or hardware to read
e-Books?
For
most of the e-Books on this site, all you'll need is your PC
or laptop running any version of Windows (such as Windows
95/98/NT/Me/XP). This is because the e-Books are in
Microsoft Windows EXE format. Therefore, once downloaded,
you only need to click the file and the e-book opens.
Another
popular format is PDF (Portable Document Format) from
Adobe*. This is a cross-platform format which can be viewed
on a PC, Mac or Linux/Unix machine. You just need to get a
copy of the free reader from Adobe at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
*If an e-Book does require Adobe Reader then this will be
stated on the download page and a link will be provided to
enable you to download the free software.
How long do eBooks take to download?
Most
e-Books vary from 500Kb to 5Mb in file size, depending on
factors such as the number of pages and the number of
illustrations in the e-Book. Therefore, with a standard
dial-up Internet connection, most e-Books can be downloaded
to your computer within a few minutes. A typical novel, for
example, can be downloaded within 3 or 4 minutes. If you
have a broadband connection then a typical e-Book will
download to your computer within a minute or two.
